Seniors and others interested in learning how to protect themselves from fraud related to home repair, insurance, finances, identity theft and more are invited to a free Aug. 24 workshop sponsored by Sen. Ted W. Lieu.

Scheduled to be held from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Felicia Mahood Multipurpose Senior Center at 11338 Santa Monica Blvd., in West Los Angeles, the event is one of series Lieu holds to help constituents protect themselves.

In addition, information will be available on Lieu’s legislative package, which includes protecting consumers from predatory used-car dealers with Senate Bill 956, a consumer-protection measure seeking milestone protections for used-car buyers by cracking down on predatory dealers where interest can be as high as 30 percent.  The Torrance Democrat hopes SB 956 receives final passage prior to the Legislature’s scheduled Aug. 31 adjournment of the 2011-12 session.

Lieu chairs the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee and represents nearly 1 million residents of Senate District 28, which includes the cities of Carson, El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance, as well as portions of Long Beach and Los Angeles, including Venice and San Pedro.
